We’ve all heard that over time we tend to look like our pets and vice versa. While I don’t look anything like a sleek black cat, my sleek black cat tends to act like me and vice versa. For example: We’re both really fussy with our fur/hair, we both like to flip out late at night, and we’re both needy for attention. These traits aren’t exactly going to go down in the annals of pet/person history, but it does kinda, sorta, maybe prove that my cat and I are both mammals with a common bond.
I’d be more likely to believe, however that pets act more like anime characters rather than their people. Arriana, my sweet little kitty, can be so damn moé sometimes with her absolutely un-cat like neediness. At other times, she’s a psycho tearing up the carpet late at night and meowing to get our asses out of bed to play with her. If I had to choose an anime character she most resembles in personality, I’d have to say Nyu from Elfen Lied. In fact, she even goes “Nyu, nyu, nyu!!” when she wants our love. Figures my cat would be moé.
Dave, being the gi-normous Star Wars geek I fell in love with, named his first dog Chewbacca, even though the little annoyance looks nothing like the massive Wookie. Many anime fans also name their pets after fave characters; anime animals or otherwise. I wonder how many black cats have the moniker Kamineko or Kuro sama neko? Hopefully no one has been cursed with a kitty that has Kamineko’s pissy attitude, although I did once know a cat just like him with the unfortunate name of Tsetse. A bitchier, more evil kitty there never was.
Does anyone have an anime pet either in personality or name? Would you want a pet that emulates an anime character or is your pooch fine as long as he’s not named Pikachu?
If anyone has any photos of their anime pet, please submit them (altered or otherwise) with a description of why you feel your pet has anime attributes and we’ll post them with this poll.
Check out Mochi’s pets, Mimi and Musubi!

As I have posted on my site, I have a turtle who loves to cosplay as a Cruiser Class Space Monster from Gunbuster and Gunbuster 2. She is named the Green Cyclone of Scaly Death too.
There’s some poor cat with Tourette’s Syndrome or something who hangs around my house. I named him Shamisen. If I ever saw a cat as cute as Piro in Kanon, I’d kidnap it and name it that.
Our Rottie, BuuBooBaby, is named in part after Majin Buu. This was the husband’s idea. We did not know at the time that he would share some of his namesake’s traits!
Our first cat (may he rest in peace) was named musubi…of course, he was
black and white with long fur…some Maine Coon in him, I believe. I’ve seen
many anime where the characters ate musubi (aka onigiri).
Taking this post on a tangential course, spam musubi has become a popular
snack in my birth state Hawaii. Here is a recipe for spam musubi which you
may find interesting:

While I wasn’t raised in Hawaii, whenever I go back it is always interesting
to listen to the locals (especially the older ones) talk in pidgin. This recipe has
the “flavor” of pidgin…in fact, I can almost hear my uncle saying this.
@tj_han, I saw a pic your turtle cosplaying with your Nono figure here http://www.riuva.com/?p=578 but I’m not familiar with the Gunbuster anime. Do you watch the anime with GCSD?
@waffo, how does the poor kitty have Tourette’s? Does it go: F* you meow! F* you Meow! What color is the kitty?
@Julie, is your pooch evil-ish then repentant? Which traits would you say he shares the most with Muji Buu?
@Mochi, spam onigiri? *yark* I hope Dave doesn’t get wind of this
or he’ll get upset; onigiri is sacred to the man. So your kitty had a bit of Maine coon in him? Those are some biiiggg kitties. But the ones I’ve met have all been gentle giants and very lovey for all that they could shred a hand in under 30 secs.
If you guys want to share your anime pet with the world, feel free to e-mail me pics and we’ll post them on this article.
@Julie – Of course, if he can turn things into chocolate…that could be useful.
@Rachel – I wrote about the spam musubi for the humor of the recipe and the
patois. If you have ever been to Hawaii, you may notice that there is almost
an obsession with spam…this dates back to WWII. Here is a short article which
talks about “Hawaii’s Soul Food”:
http://www.viamagazine.com/top_stories/articles/hawaiian_food05.asp
Musubi was not as large as most Main Coons. His features and frame were
more delicate and I doubt he ever weighed more than 16 lbs. He was a gentle
cat…unless you were a vet. Apparently, he made a big impression on my vet’s
office as they still tell stories about their encounters with him. We have
another cat which has some Maine Coon in him. His features and frame are
more like a traditional Maine Coon…really big paws, too. However, he is like
a mini-Maine Coon…smaller than Musubi, but he weighs over 17 lbs. My
wife’s boss owns a Maine Coon which is over 22 lbs. If I can find a good
photo of Musubi, I’ll e-mail it to you…we’re still using film, so I’ll have to
scan it.
What’s a GCSD???
@ tj_han GCSD is me being too lazy to type: Green Cyclone of Scaly Death…lazzzyyyy
@Mochi – While he does produce chocolate colored nuggets, I certainly would not consider them edible!
@Rachel – Buu can change from my sweet little baby into a snarling, frothing monster in about 2 seconds flat. All it takes is a glimpse of another dog or a stranger to approach me. This does not happen when he is with my husband.
He is also rather large, and he is unaware of his destructive power. Once he is in play-mode and is thundering about the house with his beloved ring toy flapping from his mouth, nothing is safe!! Cell phone chargers, bathroom doors, carelessly scattered magazines and newspapers – destroyed!
Here is a post about my little darling

@Julie, your puppy is a cutie! He’s not so good at DDR, but I don’t think Rotties are known for their rhythm. Neither are tiny black cats, lol.
I have a mutt, half shih-tzu and half bichon, named Icchan. She gets her name after Icchan from Battle Athletes Victory. The name fits as my dog is a high energy, persistent, scrappy type of dog, who keeps bugging me until I get out of bed on Saturday morning. She doesn’t care if I want to sleep in.

Since I have to get the approval of the rest of the family before naming a pet, so far we’ve only had cats called Yugi, Joey, Seto, Maya and Kirika, and a horse nicknamed Sakura. I keep pushing for more anime-related nicknames, but it can be an uphill struggle.
Awwwww, cute puppy -super rats!
@Karura, kitties rock and so do horsies (I have serious issues with adding -ie/ -y at the end of cute things, sorry). It’s rough having communal pets; everybody need to agree on a name. At least you’ve been lucky with having some of the cast of Yugi- Oh in your family ^^b.
Oh my god. That picture is freaking me out. When I was a kid we did dress up my dog and cat, but that was just using my sister’s doll clothes. They definitely weren’t the cosplaying type.
@Chris, yesssss, Kamineko occasionally possesses Arri and we have to deal with her evil until he moves on…
