I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Sit through Eva, then curse and swear and outright throw hate for Japan for 5 minutes, then sit down to watch Overman King Gainer to wash away the fail.

-Stay on top of all the anime I say I’m going to follow.
-Follow through on purchasing the titles that I watched and like.
-Write up reviews for the series I liked so I can get more people watching them!

Actually watch anime this year. I think that says it all. Oh, and pass the L2/L1 proficiency test in December. So I may not get a lot of watching done at all.

–Take notes when I watch a show I intend to review
–Write at least one substantive article on my website every day
–Actually come up with a real blogging schedule each season and follow it

    Hmmmm…
    1. watch what I have downloaded
    2. watch my DVDs (won’t happen, too many unwatched boxes)
    3. get a job so I can pay for new releases…
    4. buy less bullcrap related to anime and manga and just focus on buying anime and manga, unless I get a job, then I’ll be able to afford all of it

    - More episode reviews
    - Kick kanji to the curb and finally pass that last JLPT xP

-Collect a maximum of six shows on dvd at any given time in order to wait for more box sets.
    -Start reading manga again.

Maybe watch Azumanga Daioh again and weep like a baby while singing along to Raspberry Heaven? No, I should read Eyeshield 21 from the start all over again. Or maybe watch Hidamari Sketch again?

    -Keep a consistant blogging schedual
-get more traffic on my blog
-Finish the anime I’m watching and PAY for it! or Buy all the animes I’ve not payed for.

What an interesting question that has been posed! Coupling anime into one’s new year resolution. I’m actually quite a newbie to anime, but have become quite intrigued by it. I’m about half way through the first volume of Bleach, and find it excellent. My resolution is to complete the first volume, and finish many more and see how deep the rabbit goes!

@DrmChsr0, why would you subject yourself to such a heinous ordeal? If you watched it once, wasn’t that enough pain?

@sabas, sounds like a good plan!

@MK, good luck on your anime watching and proficiency test! How’s Japan treating you this (cold) time of year? Any good Japanese snacks I should keep my eyes open for in the states?

@Mike, take notes? You’re hardcore ^^//!! Seriously, that might be a good idea, especially with anime I have a hard time focusing on…

@dkong, ah, yes, I’m in the same boat, DVD-wise…

@Orion, but where will kanji go after you’ve kicked it out? Please, think of the kanji! Good luck with your test, kanji or no!

@super rats, hear, hear on reading more manga! I absolutely need to read more!

@JO, sounds like you’ve got a lot to choose from!

@Marie Turner, a blogging schedule is a beautiful thing; it helps in writing more efficiently, at least for me. And in keeping a consistent blogging schedule you will get more traffic.

@Bamboo Forest, You’ll go far after Bleach gets you hooked. There’s so much out there- anime is like an animated library with many genres to choose from. Welcome to the fold!

I’m in the US right now…^_^ Weather’s kind of meh. I don’t know of any new snacks coming out yet…probably March or so will have a new stash. For now, I’d just enjoy sembe.

  13. Rachel

@MK, not more sembei o_O. I can’t find a good sembei mix that stands out; they all kinda taste the same to me. I need something yummy. I actually saw some marron Pocky at the store the other day. Would you recommend it?

  14. Chris N

Yup. Finishing series here as well. I need to finish Ergo Proxy, Excel Saga, Paranoia Agent, Gun X Sword, Boogiepop Phantom, Chobits, Basilisk and a few others that friends have given me but I haven’t even started.

    Happy belated New Years, btw.
