Friday Night at Anime Central 2006

<a href=Anime Central 2006 logo' class="alignright" />It’s official: I already miss the cosplayers, the gaming, the geeking and the dancing from this year’s Anime Central 2006 in Chicago, IL. I’ve never had so much legal fun in my adult life – and that’s saying a lot!

I was privileged enough to go cover Anime Central 2006 as press and got to cover my first ever con as a journalist and participant – something which left me all tingly the entire weekend. I plan on posting all the fantastic panels I covered, the interviews, the experiences and of course, the PICTURES!!!

Thank you Anime Central 2006 for having an overabundance of AWESOME cosplayers, and for putting my faith back into mankind’s ability to be creative and talented with their cosplaying. I would also like to thank the ACen staff for putting together a great con that was well organized and brimming with panels, shows and opportunities to meet fellow fans.

anime hell logoWe arrived in Chicago Friday night around 8:30 after driving for over five hours and promptly got lost in the enormous hallways of the convention center trying to find the Anime Central 2006 press room. After following numerous and varying directions we finally found the press room and were gratified with our press badges. After that we meandered the halls until we came across a room filled to capacity with people. I had no idea that the three of us had accidentally wandered into…ANIME HELL!!! Dunh-Dunh-dunh!!

I can hardly describe Anime Hell but I’ll try for you readers who weren’t able to go…Anime Hell is a disconcerting symphony of sights and sounds cobbled together out of fan-made videos, parodies, Asian commercials, Japanese music videos (Fish Fight anyone?), clips from Asian and Western cartoons, and of course, Heino.

Who’s Heino? I asked myself that same question as fans who had obviously been here before chanted his name over and over again. To appease the fans Heino popped on-screen looking like nothing more than a cross between Andy Warhol and a reject from October Fest. Then the editing kicked in and was asking myself “Did I just see that?”

We left after an hour and a half of good hard laughing, especially at Here Comes Dr. Tran and the a cappella Mario Brothers and Zelda singers. I had wanted to check out the Yaoi panel to see what fan girls are like in person. They surely didn’t disappoint, but that’s another post. I then checked out the Anime Central 2006 Underground going on in the ballroom next to us and then conceding the fact that I was far too tired to go on we called it a night at midnight.

Rachel

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.
