Rachel

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Grotesquely obese, smelly, pimpled pedobear, seeks moe, meganekko loli. Must be prepubescent, flowered and vulnerable. Must enjoy cooking for others, tentacle-rape, and long walks by yourself. Tsundere’s tolerated.

  2. Rachel

FYI, @otaku, you’re toeing the line….The above post is a good example of what not to post, which is why it’s still there.

Folks, please don’t take advantage of this post to be a pervy ass. Anything that even smells like a joke will get pulled pronto and further indiscretions will not be tolerated.

This is a good opportunity to get to know people who like the same things as you and be able to perhaps start up further discussions. If you want a dirty love slave and you’re a pedophile, shoo fly, get the hell off my site.

Fat Yaoi Fangirlâ„¢ seeks rich, mysterious, bishonen. Must like roses, tentacle-rape, and everything I like. Semes preferred. BYO uke.

Haha, oh come on. I think otaku is just trying to be a little bit sarcastic. Fact is – if you are unable to find people to discuss anime with on the internet (!), then you must have a real problem in your life. In the internet, every single niche is tolerated, and most series you can discuss about has a very interesting thread on the Animesuki forums (except for Kino no Tabi maybe, which is because it’s rather old).

As for me, I have found my best ‘anime buddies’ with these criteras:
    - must like to discuss serious matters
    - must like the following anime/manga: Naru Taru (manga), Mushishi (anime), Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (manga), Monster (manga).
If you fall into this category, feel free to contact me. *g* If not, it’s not tragic either – most people I know don’t.

I like mecha, sci-fi, comedy, sports, action. Oh so I’m the opposite of you Rachel.

I like my mecha to have some semblance of realism, for example, Ghost in the Shell and 08th MS Team.

I like my sci-fi either militaristic, speculative, cyberpunk or steampunk. Gantz, Last Exile, GitS, Planetes come to mind.

I like my comedy random, good examples are School Rumble, Gintama and Fumoffu.

I like my sports realistic to a believable degree. Capeta and Slam Dunk are the best sports series so far.

I like my action… well, action-packed and gory. No cop-out bloodless shows like Noir please.

I hate yaoi, yuri and the overdose of moe culture so common lately.

But I don’t like to discuss stuff because I’m lazy. I’ll rather spend more time watching more shows.

@Sasa, yeah, there is an anything goes attitude on the internet. Yes, anybody can find somebody just like ‘em on the net. But no, I don’t think people have problems with their lives if they can’t find someone with the exact same interests on the net. That takes time. And dedication. Both of which I lack as of late.

My aim for this particular post is to keep things tidy and on topic. On forums that have the same things, it gets off topic quick (kinda like this ^^;;;). Also, this is a way to get to know my readers and to let my readers know each other. I wanted to get a small sense of community going on.

@tj han. What are saying you’re the opposite of me, lol. I don’t like sports anime and most mecha anime (but I liked Eva and Ghost in the Shell) but everything else you listed is pretty much right up my ally.

“I like my action… well, action-packed and gory. No cop-out bloodless shows like Noir please.” Word. “I like my sci-fi either militaristic, speculative, cyberpunk or steampunk. Gantz, Last Exile, GitS, Planetes come to mind.” Recognize.

  7. super rats

SM in Philly seeks for anime buddy. I’ll give any show a chance. Five of my faves: Cowboy Bebop; Planetes; Princess Tutu; Boogiepop Phantom; Fruits Basket. I love cons and buy crazy amts of anime merch.

  8. Sasa

“That takes time. And dedication. Both of which I lack as of late.” – May I ask why you
    1. blog
    2. say that you like to discuss about anime for a “ridiculously long time”
    3. want a community in your blog
when at the same time you say that you lack time and dedication?

  9. David

Sasa – Actually, I think Rachel was referring to the fact that she “can’t find someone with the exact same interests on the net”. That is what takes “time and dedication”.

Instead of having time to do that, she’s “extremely busy blogging”, discussing anime for “a ridiculously long time” and “building a community”.

  10. Rachel

@Sasa, what David said. I’m not going to argue too much on why I don’t comb through forums for hours. I’m not lazy or uniformed, just very busy doing the things which make my blog what it is.

As it is, I do spend a long time researching the topics for the cultural posts, the recipes, the candy reviews, the artist interviews, the polls, anime reviews, getting the screencaps, developing the branding and the website, talking to con organizers and sponsorship folks for the giveaways, talking to distributing companies for screeners and review copies, doing my best to thoughtfully respond to every comment on my posts, and I also spend a lotta time looking for writers and editing their and my work, not to mention managing the e-mail requests I get from people who need advice or want me to blog about their cause or interview them. I’m the one person orchestrating all this. I love every minute I spend blogging, and even though it is time consuming, I’m not complaining. This is my blog and I’m pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished. I think my lack of anime buddy finding skills is a small oversight, don’t you? ^^

    Hmm, let see..

I like the most comedy, adventure, sci-fi, cyberpunk, sports and slice of life anime. Example are: Sexy Commando Gaiden, Cromartie High School, Ouran, One Piece, Gintama, Beck, Slamdunk, GiTS.

    Least like mecha and romance.

Hates with vile passion yuri, yaoi, shota, and overdose of loli’s in anime.

Loves marathoning and reruns. A lot.

(Loves marathoning = less anime discussion, eh?)

  16. Remi

Male, 23 from Nottingham, UK. Lookng for someone of similar tastes or at least an understanding of my own to discuss and recommend anime series to me. I’m quite open to anyone who’s either near by and would like to hang out or someone from across the world to chat to on msn/emails.

I have little problem finding the films I like, its the series I have trouble finding.

Basically I’m looking for the deep stuff. I want something that’s a combination of political/social insight, intelligence, trippy or bizarre, brave and with excellent characterisation. I’m looking for the adult stuff, high brow. They don’t have to super deep but has to have somethjing about it.
    Anime likes –
My favourite animes include GitS;SAC, Death Note, Paranoia Agent and despite dissing it for years also quite like DBZ so you know a great show is a great show and doesn’t have to be super deep.. Also enjoyed what I have seen of Monster and Cowboy Bebop.
Film wise I love stuff by Studio Ghibli (Pom Poko, Mononoke etc etc), Mamoru Oshii (GitS, Jin-Roh, Patlabor 2), Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika.)
Other than Anime I love Tne Wire, Six Feet Under, Life On Mars (UK) and the films by Stanley Kubrick, Shane Meadows, Park Chan-Wook, Stephen Chow, David Lynch, PT Anderson, Darren Afronosky, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch amongst others.

Dislike; Pokemon and its clones and general childish fluff. Can’t stand bad acting not that it matters much with anime, but dubs can sound terrible.

Email me or add me on MSN (leave a short greeting so I know where you found me.

Looking for girl to kick the crap out of me every time I screw up. Like Naru to my Keitaro, I can stumble in on you in the shower, and you can send me flying through the ceiling. Also, someone to beat me with a wooden kendo stick would be good too, just as long as you can send me fly out the side of a building.
All medical bills, and damages must be payed for by you.

  23. Maes Hughes

Nice, sensitive, strong, hot, 29-year-old Colonel (isn’t) seeking a nice, kind, slightly assertive woman to be his girlfriend so I am finding one for him.

He needs someone who understands him as well as I do, but is a girl (unlike I am) and who isn’t married (again, unlike I am).

You’ll need to be able to give him a good smack across the face every once in a while too.

  24. Dev
