I love anime. Specifically, series involving any of the following things: weird fantasy elements, super-powers, robots, aliens, wicked humor, crazy villains, horror, ninjas and samurai. I guess that means I like a lot of anime. I am pretty particular about the quality of animation and voice acting. If the character designs and animation quality aren't of über-quality, I quickly loose interest. The first anime-related series I ever watched was Battle of the Planets - otherwise known as Gatachman. The first true theatrical anime feature film I saw was Akira. My first exposure to manga was later in life when I read Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy.There are so many incredible elements of Japanese culture. Some of the most exciting to me are the style of design and storytelling. I'm a web designer & illustrator, and I find myself looking to Japanese design for inspiration all the time.Anime blogging has taught me even more about Japanese culture and anime than I ever expected, and I continue to learn more every week. In fact, I'd love to travel to Japan. Rachel and I hope to visit sometime within the next few years.

This looks like a really good magazine, do you subscribe? (would you recommend it? I’m assuming it’s probably not cheap…) I get shoujo beat right now and would be interested in something that features more variety of anime/manga :) .

@Susie Q, I think AI is a good deal per issue: $4.99 US. I’m sure it’s cheaper to subscribe for a year than to buy it mag by mag.

Newtype was an awesome anime magazine, but unfortunately they shut down and morphed into PiQ, a crappy imitation of a pop culture mag. There’s another magazine out there, OtakuUSA, but I’ve only read their premiere issue, which wasn’t very good- at all. They may have improved on their voice (too bloggy for print) and their grammar and spelling (run on sentences are a no-no in the print profession). But I recommend you check out OtakuUSA at the store and decide for yourself.

Oh, one thing about AI that I have to warn you about: Spoilers ABOUND in each issue. Death Note was ruined, ruined I say!, by an article in last month’s mag. Be very aware of this before you read any anime related feature. If you don’t mind spoilers, then no worries.

Subscriptions are only $28 for a year (12 issues)!

We keep the spoilers to a minimum, and warn people in the intro when we’re going to give something important away. But once the series is finished running on U.S. TV, all bets are off :)

Thanks Rachel (and Summer)! I think I’ll try out anime insider, looks like a good mix of anime and manga and related news :) . I’ll watch out for spoilers- for the mystery/action type shows anyway I wouldn’t want them to give anything away, but for some reason I don’t mind spoilers for shoujo-type shows…(okay actually I sometimes look for them b/c I’m impatient…)

@Summer, oh but the spoiler I read about Death Note made me die a little inside…and cry. I didn’t know the first season of Death Note was over with on Cartoon Network, until I read the article and found out too late T_T.
