Another Perspective…

I love sharing anime with my friends and family. I’d like to think that I have good taste in anime and that I like good anime and only good anime, but that’s my opinion. I thought that when I lent out Escaflowne to a friend that she would join the ranks of Escaflowne lovers, especially since she’s such a fan of fantasy. Wrong! Oh, she e-mailed me and let me know how and why she disliked it:

I should have known from the first minute or so that there would be no redemption for this one. Yet, I stuck with it. And quite honestly, I was rooting for it to pull through because I wanted to like it. The concept was interesting if a bit cliched. There were many laughable one-liners. The art was not so bad (the phallic noses bothered me a bit though). I kind of liked a few of the characters and the use of humanoids is always cool in my book. But…

  • - Why is it that every popular Japanese TV show needs to have mechs in it?!?
  • - It was super icky when Allen kissed Hitori. Can we say pedophile?
  • - Why all the cheese? Watch the first minute or so and try not to laugh.
  • - What’s with the packaging that shows characters that you never see?

You know that part in Pee-Wee where Frances offers to buy his bike and Pee-Wee says “It’s not for sale, Frances.” I wish I had counted the times that someone ended a sentence with “Allen Schizar” in that same tone of voice.

Holy shit that never lost it’s funny.

I suppose I came around to it a little by the last few episodes, but the ending was a bit of a disappointment. I can’t really put my finger on why I didn’t like the ending, but I can say that if there was an attempt to fix this one through the use of movies, spin-offs, mini series, whatever, I don’t even care enough to want to watch them.

It’s good to get another perspective on anime, and while I was hoping that Zingor would like Escaflowne, I’m not going to cry cause she doesn’t. Hopefully in the future Zingor will share her other opinions on anime and games else where on this site :) .

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

LOL! I’ll be glad to share my opinions. BTW, you never explained the characters on the packaging that aren’t in the anime. Is there another series or something?
