Blu-Ray Hentai?

Have you heard about the fight between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD formats? Hollywood is still flipping back and forth between the two, the US adult film industry has tentatively chosen HD-DVD and the anime industry has still not decided which way to go…they’re waiting for Hollywood to decide. But Blu-Ray DVD recently got another step closer to winning the format war with Sony’s announcement last week at the Japanese Adult Treasures Expo 2007 (caution 18+) that they would be providing support for Japanese adult films on Blu-Ray DVD…kinda. This issue is very technical because of the way the law works in Japan, but it basically means that adult film companies in Japan can now have their titles distributed on Blu-Ray DVD. Plus, let’s face it – p0rn is p0pular.

So why is this important to us anime fans? Well, I think that since Sony is such a trend-setter in Japan, more anime production companies will follow their lead. Also, Blu-Ray DVDs cost less…so (hopefully) Blu-Ray Anime will be less expensive than HD-Anime. They also have higher storage capacity, so the studios can put more data on the disks.
