If you’re on Twitter like we are, you might want to follow Scott Green (who writes the anime column on Ain’t It Cool News). He recently posted a link to Variety’s review of Dragonball Evolution. The review isn’t very in-depth, but it’s worth mentioning since they’re a ‘mainstream’ publication. Here’s an excerpt of their review:

Dragonball Evolution
As helmed by James Wong (the “Final Destination” franchise) “Dragonball Evolution” doesn’t take itself too seriously, but avoids campiness. Efforts to maintain a sexual subtext will feel inappropriate to some, but is consistent with the story’s fairy-tale symbols and structure.
Production seems to have been hastily thrown together, and some scenes appear to have been shot using outmoded rear projection techniques. More care has been taken with the battle scenes; the climactic clash between Piccolo and Goku offers a faithful CGI representation of the ethereal powers as drawn in the original manga. Pic’s ending sets up the inevitable sequel…continue reading at Variety.com
I have no interest in Dragonball, and this review doesn’t changed my mind about the movie. What do you think after reading the review? Are you going to see Dragonball Evolution?

I love anime. Specifically, series involving any of the following things: weird fantasy elements, super-powers, robots, aliens, wicked humor, crazy villains, horror, ninjas and samurai. I guess that means I like a lot of anime. I am pretty particular about the quality of animation and voice acting. If the character designs and animation quality aren't of über-quality, I quickly loose interest. The first anime-related series I ever watched was Battle of the Planets - otherwise known as Gatachman. The first true theatrical anime feature film I saw was Akira. My first exposure to manga was later in life when I read Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy.There are so many incredible elements of Japanese culture. Some of the most exciting to me are the style of design and storytelling. I'm a web designer & illustrator, and I find myself looking to Japanese design for inspiration all the time.Anime blogging has taught me even more about Japanese culture and anime than I ever expected, and I continue to learn more every week. In fact, I'd love to travel to Japan. Rachel and I hope to visit sometime within the next few years.
I wouldn’t download this crap, let alone pay to see it. You know as much a s i hate Dragon Ball Z anime, the manga is pretty good, or MUCH much better.
I’m glad you like the manga – I could never get into it though, anime or otherwise.
In all actuality… I don’t think this movie will turn out very well… I mean… some things are better left untouched… DBZ is some of those things… I don’t think this movie will be any good and that being said I’m not going to go see it for fear of being disappointed and potentially the entire series being ruined for me forever. Though I am kind of curious to see what route the storyline will take… That’s not enough to make me go see it. I blindly went and saw street fighter… That’s the last mistake I’ll ever make…
Besides… the Actor for Goku looks… just… ugh… No!
My two cents
~ Okysho out!
What do you think most hard-core Dragonball Z fans will think about it?
It is just not Goku at all. A big NO
LOL yeah he was seriously miscast. ^_^
I don’t think DBE will be as bad as all the fanboys think it will be. It will probably be a decent movie.
as an adaption, its bad, really bad, but for sumone whose not into dragonball, then let me tell u as a film itself, its even crappier, its short, its suppose to b an action movie rite? well not even one fight scene is epic, they had 100 million budget n looks like they spent only 5 mill on it and spent the 95 million on getting drunk knowing everybody involved in the film careers r gonna end. oh n the females in this movies r hoes -hi yamcha- -hi bulma- -lets make out- -sure- thats like 5 mins together and bam
