@omgpizza, You make good points, which are well reasoned and I thank you for your patient replies.

I don't think that chick flicks which have sex scenes are porn, as long as said sex scenes aren't long drawn out and frequent and aren't incredibly detailed with highly graphic content.

Yes, I did say that girls liking guys holding hands is gross. To clarify, since much has changed in the two years I wrote this post:

1.) I still don't think yaoi is hot or cute, however, I don't care who prefers what; yaoi fans aren't hurting anyone by liking what they like. No one should ever be made to feel like an outcast for their personal preferences (as long as said personal preferences are legal and don't involve children or animals)

2.) I have no idea what American fans are calling explicit stories mainly focused on depicting male/male graphic sex. I always thought that yaoi=gay porn and shonen-ai= affection. When I say yaoi, this is what I refer to.

3.)In talking about fangirls gone wild, I should also lump into that category any fan of either gender of any graphic content who profess said love loudly and obnoxiously to one and all. I steer clear of anyone who claims to be an overt fan of porn. That's way too much information for me. Don't care what anyone does legally in the privacy of their own home, but I prefer not to know what someone <em>does</em> do in their own home.

you make the distinction now but in your last comment you said boy's love=yaoi. Even if you do go with the definition of yaoi as being explicit, it's still not the same was PWP smut. It CAN be PWP smut but it can also have the same fluffy romantic story of a shounen ai +explicit sex scenes. Do you still think it's gay porn? If so I assume you also think of every chick flick with sex scenes as porn. Besides, when people talk about "yaoi fangirls" they mean girls who are into everything male/male that comes from Japan, not just the sex part. You said in the original post that girls liking guys holding hands is gross, no? I don't get how you got from holding hands to porn.

I also don't think many people think of yaoi as inherently deep and meaningful. People mostly think of it as a guilty pleasure. If they do think it's automatically more profound than het then that's pretty dumb.

@omgpizza, would that make the titles with 0 sex scenes yaoi or shonen-ai? My understanding is that <strong>yaoi</strong> contains sex-scenes whereas <strong>shonen-ai</strong> focuses on the affection between two men. Isn't Boys love the umbrella term for any anime/manga featuring homosexual characters, either in graphic or non-explicit scenarios? And isn't yaoi explicit?

For me, yaoi, and <em>anything</em> featuring explicit sexual acts, is nothing but fanservice. I have no issue with fanservice, if people keep their "enthusiasm" to themselves and quit decrying others as "homophobes" for not getting on the yaoi bandwagon.

I can't see how any title, where the end result is two (or more) of <em>any</em> gender ending up naked, can be some deep, meaningful manga or anime. It's created and sold for a niche market (yaoi fangirls) within a niche market (anime) and to pretend it's something more than it is (gay porn) would be like saying "Debbie Does Dallas" is a coming-of-age flick.

"Hell, I like porn (not yaoi, lolicon, or yuri) but I refuse to use secret code words like “boy love” or “lolicon” If boy love=yaoi and yaoi=gay porn then shouldn’t boy love=gay porn?"

that's because yaoi isn't always porn, Sherlock. Some of the best selling titles have 0 sex scenes. It's *fiction* that's as unrealistic as other gay/het porn and romance in any form. And why the hell should these girl know how gay men interact? Do gay men have to pass some sort of test before they can write or draw lesbians and straight women?

Relax. Breath. Everything will be alright. People will always like stuff that you don't like. There's nothing you can do about it.

Hmmm... let me try and explain the yaoi fangirl psyche to you. Oh, yeah I am one, I like gay porn. I'm a pervert. Anyway, continuing...

I find yaoi to be absolutely hilarious. I take great enjoyment in reading about horny gay guys that emotionally act like girls. And the stories are full of so much angst and drama, and implausible situations. Well its just crack. Yaoi exists in its own land. Where rape is the ultimate confession of love, and all pretty attractive guys are gay and horny. And there are no rules about who is off limits to love. Absolutely horrible things when applied to the real world, but yaoiland isn't the real world. So its not much of a stretch for girls to throw straight characters from normal animes into yaoiland. To many its just as entertaining to see characters they do know acting like girls. And why throw the masculine character into the submissive role? Cause its hella funny to see. Thats about all there is to it. Its not cause its plausible, but because its implausible.

And I think girls think two guys being intimate is hot, is no different from a guy thinking two girls intimate is hot. And calling it cute. Well lots of girls say that things they like are cute. Dunno, seeing cute guys romantically embraced in each others arms. Its an overload of cuteness. :)

One year at Oni-Con, me and my friends were just drunk enough to play yaoi fest chicken. We all got front-row seats for yaoi fest, and the first to leave had to pay for more drinks later.

Luckily for us, Oni-Con's first year was rocky, and they didn't have any yaoi to show. So they screened Fruits Basket....

I don't know what they meant by that.

@L, My main gripe with yaoi culture are the girls who get crazy when it comes to their yaoi. I have nothing against porn; gay, straight, bi, midget, etc.

Hell, <strong>I</strong> like porn (<strong>not</strong> yaoi, lolicon, or yuri) but I refuse to use secret code words like "boy love" or "lolicon" If boy love=yaoi and yaoi=gay porn then shouldn't boy love=gay porn? Sure, call Japanese manga that are men luv'n men yaoi since that's what the Japanese call it but porn isn't cute or adorable.

Then there's the slash and fan art...Why?! They weren't originally gay or lovers! Gah!!

But that still doesn't bother me nearly as much as the overall yaoi fangirl attitude towards people who don't like yaoi. Just because someone doesn't like yaoi doesn't make them a homophobe. Would a gay man who doesn't like straight porn be a heterophobe? Would a lesbian who doesn't like gay porn with two men be a homophobe? That logic doesn't wash.

If you like your yaoi, you're absolutely entitled to luv'n it, just like any other red blooded American man or woman. I have no idea if you're a crazy yaoi fangirl and wouldn't until I met you. Love your porn, just don't hate everyone else who doesn't feel the same as you (and I don't know if you do).

I have to say that I don't see anything wrong with yaoi. I love to watch and read it because it's fun. Yes, I'm a big big big fan of yaoi and even though some girls get a little crazy over it, I don't. Some people thinks that its revolting and dirty especially when it comes to girls watching it. Personally I'll tell them to just shut up because it is non of their damn business what other people do. I tell my friends that if they don't like it then don't say shit around me about it and shut up because I don't judge them when they watch their stuff. I'm not afraid like some people to go to the stores and buy them or the conventions. Sometimes just to piss people off I would go to the store and pick up a yaoi manga and I will stand there and read it. Ha Ha Ha

It's so funny to watch the expressions on people's faces when they ask me what I'm reading and I tell them. Anyway, I love it and people shouldn't be afraid if they like yaoi, after all we are all humans.

I like yaoi. It's hilarious. Being unable to hold in your poop after a rampant buttsechz session is just hilarious.

Also, I have seen Kuso Miso Technique in it's entirety when It was online.

And yes, I am male.
