Halloween Pictures

WHEW! Halloween is over! Although I adore Halloween and although I thoroughly enjoyed myself this time around, I can’t say I’m sorry to pack it all away till next year. This year Dave and I went all out with our costumes, sparing no expense, and believe me, at the end of it all it was worth it.

We both dressed up to go out together as couple; something we’ve never done before. We took a few pages from Lewis Carroll’s most excellent book, Alice in Wonderland. Dave was dressed up as the Mad Hatter (kodona style) and I was dressed as the Queen of Hearts (loli style).

Mad Hatter and Queen of HeartsI made mine from the ground up, i.e. there was no pattern so I had to make one along with making the costume itself. Seeing as how I never even used a pattern before this dress, I’m thinking I did pretty damn good.

Dave got lucky at Rock Star Rags and was able to tailor his costume to his liking out of some old clothes from the warehouse. He did everything himself; dyeing, sewing, painting, etc. I’m so proud of his skillz and so glad I didn’t need to sew anything else! He devoted about 15 solid hours of labor into his costume and it looks fantastic!! *beams with pride*

I believe the time put into my costume, taking into consideration that the only things I didn’t make were the shoes and the bloomers, was around 65 hours or a decade’s worth of sanity. This dress nearly killed me, no lies. I was all like, “Ha ha, Halloween, you no sneaky up on me this year! I’ll thwart your plans to have me working till the last minute and freaking me out about time and money!!”

Yet, I underestimated the power of the loli. Each time I thought I was done with a section, I’d glance at the loli bibles and say, “Hey, I can so do that!” Then I would sew some ruffles, do a little more to the goring, make a few more bows, tie on a few more ribbons, bead some more lace, gather a little more material, oh it never ended! But it finally did end two days before the Halloween happenings in St. Louis and damn, was it ever a happy ending! Not to brag (but I so am) but I made: the dress, the knee highs, the crinoline, the crown, the scepter, the choker and the earrings.

So here for your viewing pleasure are Dave’s and my Halloween costumes.

*Note: Before I get any more bitching about “OMG, that’s so not Loli”, or “ewww, die”, keep inside your heads that these are COSTUMES, not an actual loli dress; a loli inspired COSTUME. Not a kodona get-up; a kodona style COSTUME. These are our HAND MADE, ORIGINAL designs inspired by the Lolita and Kodona fashions as found in the Gothic Lolita Bibles and other note worthy resources. We hand made these ourselves for HALLOWEEN. I am definitely aware that while I really dig the style, I’m no damn expert. The poses I did are for HALLOWEEN. I do NOT go around trying to be Lolita on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. So before I get some snide remarks about how that’s not how you strike a loli pose, eat my crinoline. Sheesh, so read this please before I get any more bitchy, loli-snob hate mail.

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.
