I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Happy Halloween everyone! Is anyone dressing up as anime characters this year?

Oh man. My Halloween this year was spent in class. The teacher was absent the previous week, so he decided to teach an extra long lecture. We weren’t let out until almost 10:00pm. Maybe it was his way of tricking us?

@Chris N, did you go out the Saturday before Halloween, though? That’s when all the par-tays were. We had fun!

Unfortunately, no. There’s an underground party we like in Oakland, but the info page went up day of, and by then we were too tired for all night dancing. But, the day after Halloween we were walking around our neighborhood and came across this house done up to look like a cemetery, complete with animatronic demons and popup zombies, airjets and everything. There was a line around the corner to go through a small walk-through section of it. Turned out it was better than a lot of the recent pay haunts around here. I hear the guy who put it on was on the Today Show this year, but I’m not entirely sure. Still, turned out pretty cool.
