I just recently learned this..haha that Oldboy was from a manga. I was thrilled with the Korean film. Its so gritty and raw. Maybe it would turn out to be like Hong Kong’s Infernal Affairs turned The Departed. There will always be a challenge for Hollywood to match the Asian aesthetics that could not be measured by how much money you spend.
But I’m looking forward to this, maybe it would be different since its from the manga and not the movie…

The original Korean movie was really very tense. I don’t know if the Hollywood version will match up to it, even if it’s from the comic book adaptation.

DragonScholar – I agree. When it was originally announced, they didn’t indicate that it would be anything other than a remake of the film. Which sounded kinda dumb ’cause it’s so good but a lot of the concepts probably wouldn’t sit well with western audiences. Now that it’s clearly an adaptation of the manga, it’s sounds a lot better.

I hadn’t paid much attention to this film, but this enthuses me. Respect for the source material and the presence of Will Smith? Definitely good signs – Smith can do well even in the presence of bad or mediocre material, and if the film’s crew is looking to actually respect the original works, moreso the better.

Now that Hollywood is looking at Japan so eagerly, I wonder what’s next in the adaption train . . .
