HOLY CRAP!! ADV and Geneon Are NOT Merging!!!

Geneon X ADVOkay, so there were waves made in a previous post about ADV and Geneon’s announcement of a “strategic alliance”. In David and I’s opinion, we thought this move boded ill for fans, in the long run (short term benefits abound).

Today however, these two anime giants looked each other in the eye, and for whatever reason, decided that their relationship was not to be and announced their decision in this press release:

ADV AND GENEON CALL OFF STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

HOUSTON, September 21, 2007—ADV Films, the number one producer-distributor of anime outside of Japan, today confirmed that it has withdrawn plans to distribute Geneon Entertainment’s DVDs, CDs, and other product in North America.

“We regret that we could not complete an arrangement with Geneon Entertainment,” said ADV Films co-founder and President John Ledford. “We have enormous admiration for Geneon’s line and wish them the best of luck.”

The strategic alliance announced jointly by ADV Films and Geneon Entertainment on August 29, which was slated to take effect October 1, would have made ADV Geneon’s sole distributor in North America.

End press release

Sadly, it was reported that Geneon underwent a series of layoffs shortly after the alliance announcement. Coincidence? What happens to those employees caught between this now defunct “strategic alliance”? For now, I’m going to adopt Mochi’s approach of wait and see, since I believe there’ll be more drama unfolding sometime in the future involving these anime giants.

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life.After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

    @yourfallen, I think Geneon USA, as we know it, is gone. I haven’t heard about what will happen to their titles. We’ll post any info we can about the latest Geneon developments.

    @Rachel
    I know…I’ve been looking online for updates, but it will probably be a while before we can get any more information.

    Well right on the heels of management idiots like David and Joey, among others, getting iPhones and Hummers, there was another round of layoffs last Friday and a bunch of others had thier insurance taken away including people like K. Jones who just had a baby. Whenever the morons at the top feel thier massive salaries threatened, they just lay people off. It’s disgusting.

    @ADV Employee, are you talking about ADV having layoffs? If so, that’s harsh. Is ADV having any problems? Are we going to be posting articles on the health of ADV’s titles? I hope not…

    Sadly, it’s like that at a lot of companies here in the valley (thankfully not the one I’m currently working for). I worked at one where they fired everyone by email. They kept the executives on till the very end, but they ran the company into the ground. I hope that doesn’t happen to ADV. They’ve been around far too long to go that way.

    honestly does this mean that anime like black lagoon is going to be stopped being made?
