Look, Up In the Sky! It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane…It’s a Skyfish?

Believe it or not, the Japanese have a long history with the paranormal. Stretching back as far as their written history, they’ve reported through pictures, writings and word-of-mouth their extraordinary encounters with the supernatural.

Japanese SkyfishNowadays, why bother with such mundane media to broadcast paranormal reports when there are video cameras and the internet?

With the advent of the camcorder has come the discovery of an undulating, rod-like creature that supposedly lives among us as we go about our daily lives. Reportedly too fast to be seen by the naked eye, this nigh invisible creature’s presence can only be seen on video footage. This “skyfish“, aka, rod, aka, solar entity, is a recent entry into the cryptozoology books.

eureka7 sfAs stated before, this creature is too fast to be seen unaided but they’re supposedly all around us, everyday. In Japan, these skyfish have made an impact on the Japanese paranormal scene. They’ve not only made their way into anime by making appearances in the Eureka Seven anime, but they’ve also been featured in video games and music.

Though skyfish “live” (no one knows if they’re really alive) all across the globe, the majority of specialists who claim to be able to catch these elusive phenomena live in Japan.

TV in Japan has two videos of a Japanese skyfish wrangler at work.

Regardless of whether or not skyfish really do exist, there’s no denying that some people believe they do and that the bulk of those people live in Japan. What do you think? Are skyfish real or are they just an interesting footnote in the Japanese subculture?

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life.After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

    Hey, they got Godzilla, why not let them have skyfish too? XD Considerably harmless considering the firebreathing alternative. ^^;

    @Arakan, According to the rod’s MOD, it’s a highly poisonous creature. That, coupled with it’s invisibility, makes it very dangerous. At least you can see Godzilla coming…
