Dante from Devil May Cry
I’m starting this blog because there isn’t crap on the internet about anime in Carbondale, Illinois. There’s no info or mention on any message board, website, or forum specifically for people who live in the area that are interested in anime, manga, and all that entails. That’s excluding the people here that will sell it to you, and there are a scarce few of those.
Maybe there are clubs and groups that get together but they don’t advertise, and if they do advertise, they don’t do it very well. I think a while back there was someone who tried to form a RSO anime club at SIU, but that was nine years ago. I always thought it was hard enough to find anime and manga in Carbondale (mostly have to order it or drive to St. Louis and pray they have what you’re looking for), let alone find people willing to talk to you about it. So, well, I’ll try to at least partially bridge that gap in that regard.

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.
Hi. I know this reply is nearly 4 years too late, but I found this blog through Google. I know there has to be anime related groups that get together by now. Does anyone have information on current get togethers?
