Miyazaki Version of Adventures in Slumberland starring Little Nemo!

Ever seen the animated Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (not to be confused with ‘Finding Nemo‘)? It was an based off the original comic strip by Winsor McCay, who is a highly-regarded illustrator and animator from the early 1900’s. Apparently, Haio Miyazaki produced a test for the movie in 1984. Unfortunately, this version of the film wasn’t made – but it’s cool to see how it could have turned out anyway! Here are a few details, with the video below:

…an animation test that was to sell the idea of a Miyazaki version of Winsor McCay’s brilliant seminal strip… Adventures in Slumberland starring Little Nemo! – Harry from AintItCool.com (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36346)

If you’re wondering what a Miyazaki version might’ve been like, check this out…a short test film dating from December 1984. Key Miyazaki animator/director Yoshifumi Kondo (Whisper Of The Heart) directed this test sequence, supposedly filmed in 70mm. The mind boggles as to what could have been. – Jerry from CartoonBrew.com (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/anime/little-nemo-test-film)

I can’t imagine how a Hollywood studio would see this test and then say ‘no thanks’!

I love anime. Specifically, series involving any of the following things: weird fantasy elements, super-powers, robots, aliens, wicked humor, crazy villains, horror, ninjas and samurai. I guess that means I like a lot of anime. I am pretty particular about the quality of animation and voice acting. If the character designs and animation quality aren't of über-quality, I quickly loose interest. The first anime-related series I ever watched was Battle of the Planets - otherwise known as Gatachman. The first true theatrical anime feature film I saw was Akira. My first exposure to manga was later in life when I read Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy.There are so many incredible elements of Japanese culture. Some of the most exciting to me are the style of design and storytelling. I'm a web designer & illustrator, and I find myself looking to Japanese design for inspiration all the time.Anime blogging has taught me even more about Japanese culture and anime than I ever expected, and I continue to learn more every week. In fact, I'd love to travel to Japan. Rachel and I hope to visit sometime within the next few years.

There was also a really kickass NES game based on this by Capcom that was made.

I’m amazed Nemo’s sheets stay on the bed….

Maybe they didn’t think Little Nemo would sell in a Disney Princess environment?

There are a lot of movies that I saw as a little kid and every once in a while remember, suddenly and long to watch…this is one of them…the idea that this could have been japanimated is mind bottling…they should try to do it again…but isn’t miyasaki only making one more movie?
