I love anime. Specifically, series involving any of the following things: weird fantasy elements, super-powers, robots, aliens, wicked humor, crazy villains, horror, ninjas and samurai. I guess that means I like a lot of anime. I am pretty particular about the quality of animation and voice acting. If the character designs and animation quality aren't of über-quality, I quickly loose interest. The first anime-related series I ever watched was Battle of the Planets - otherwise known as Gatachman. The first true theatrical anime feature film I saw was Akira. My first exposure to manga was later in life when I read Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy.There are so many incredible elements of Japanese culture. Some of the most exciting to me are the style of design and storytelling. I'm a web designer & illustrator, and I find myself looking to Japanese design for inspiration all the time.Anime blogging has taught me even more about Japanese culture and anime than I ever expected, and I continue to learn more every week. In fact, I'd love to travel to Japan. Rachel and I hope to visit sometime within the next few years.

i loved the original eva series, and i hope i will be able to see that movie(s) in europe soon, it is really too bad, that there is so little anime been shown in german and austrian channels or cinemas.

only major movies getting shown there, and only the most commonly shown series and movies ever make it to the tv (except erotic animes).

Eva got me into anime, flaws and all, so it has a special place in my fanboy heart…I just hope Anno is still capable of telling a good story.

  3. David

olli – hopefully the Rebuild of Evangelion dvd will be released shortly after it’s theatrical premiere. Although I’d rather have a big screen release!

Mike – I think Hideaki Anno is still capable of telling a good Evangelion story, so no worries there. Perhaps the ending will even be coherent! :)

Why can’t they just let sleeping dogs lie? I have a feeling that it will bring up more questions than it answers. I loved the original series but I don’t want to subject myself to the babbling nonsense that “concluded” it again. They say that the fourth movie will be a new ending to the original series. Right, they said that about the “End of Evangelion” movie too. While it explained more, it also brought up more loose ends that they didn’t tie up.

Who knows. Maybe they will come out with something satisfying this time, but they already tried twice and failed. I have little hope.

you an idiot. both endings were amazing. go die.

  5. Rachel

Ah, -Zingor speaks for me as well, and she speaks better than I would.

I’ll see this when I’m in a “mood”. God knows when that’ll be and I doubt I’ll watch this with any hope. I’ll try and keep an open mind but, meh, after the two movies, whatever.

  6. roger

i like eva. hopefully i’ll like the new ones as well.

  7. Rachel

I like EVA too, -Roger, but the ending to the series was senseless and had the feel of a lack of funds about it.

Then there were the two movies which were supposed to wrap up all the loose ends but actually managed to tangle the story even further.

How did you feel about the series’ ending and the two movies?

  8. GFF - Eldar

Personally i liked the evangelion series very much, with the exception of 25 26, the movies were ok, but left to many questions. What I’d rather like to see is a new Evangelion series that continues onto the old movies, that way it may leave less loose ends then crammed movies would.

    But thats just me.

  9. PWM

I agree with you guys. The series and the movies both left too many unanswered questions. It really ticked me off. I’m praying that the four new movies will do a better job concluding the story.

Intresting. I assume you have seen the new logo for NERV?

  12. mochi

    @Shinji

Yes…it was posted in this article as part of the last story:

    http://theanimeblog.com/2007/06/11/anime-not-too-new-news/

The story itself may interest you as it notes the chapter titles for
    the four upcoming films.

I found some of the 4 new Evangelion films videos: If any one wants to see videos of the new Evangelion movies go to http://eva.yahoo.co.jp/gekijou/ and select the yellow ‘1 M’ word!

The one – Great tip! I’ve quoted your comment on the main page (with credit to you). Thanks! :)

I saw it last night in Osaka, and I’ve gotta say, it seem pretty frickin’ good. No spoilers, not that that’s really a possibility in this case.

I remember being appalled by the first two movies that attempted to cram a series into 4 hours, and that certainly wasn’t the case here. It’s like the most self-indulgent aspects of the series have been edited by someone that has a clue, while at the same time weaknesses that I didn’t even really realize were present in the series have been addressed. The characters seem more believable, more human. The city actually seems populated by people. The narrative flows more, and is more coherent. And the added effects are (generally, with one notable exception in my opinion) pretty well done and serve the story/mood well. Oh, and best of all the annoyingly tedious pervy moments that stopped me from being able to recommend this film to people who aren’t used to excusing that from anime have been drastically reduced! I mean the famous scenes seemed to still be there, but a lack of lingering focus make them a much better fit with the story and less a hands-down-trousers-for-otaku type of thing.

So all in all, pretty damn well done really. Good to see a cool story with incredible design getting a well-deserved makeover. I’ve gone from being a cynic to a believer. Fingers crossed for the other two…

  16. David

Rodney – That’s awesome you were able to catch the Eva movie. Do you mind if I quote your review in a post? I tried emailing you but got a ‘return to sender’ notice.

  17. Rodney

Nah, I don’t mind, go for it. And that’ll teach me for leaving a false address, ay. :) So quote away…

  18. David

Rodney – Fantastic! Look for the post tomorrow. :)

  19. Meh

I just wish that the movies would come out in Australia. We dont get any animated movies down here at the bottom of the world……….

Does anyone know when the dvd for the new movie is coming out?

And is a “live action” movie coming out for evangelion as well? i have seen previews for it on youtube but they all look like hoaxes.

  20. Rodney

As for the live action movie, It was on hold last time I checked. I’ve got some mates in concept art at Weta and they did a whole bunch of work for it literally years ago, looked frickin’ amazing. So it began and was definately plodding along, but…then it stopped. For whatever reason. Maybe if these new Eva movies do well it’ll get made. But then again, if it was a single movie how would they cram the entire story into 2 hours without wrecking it? Hmm…

  21. Meh

I reckon they could pull it off with a live action movie. they would probably tweak the plot a bit. They could also make it a 3 hour movie. I just hope they end up making it.

  22. Rachel

@Meh, A three hour movie is a good idea for Eva; I can’t see how they wouldn’t mess it up if it were shorter. I’m still wondering how they’re going to make the movie appeal to a wider, non-fan audience without tweaking the movie into a Westernized pile of stinking crap.

  23. Meh

There are a HUGE number of Eva fans and the previews for the movie look very good so people who are fans of Eva and people who are fans of futuristic action(possibly horror depending on how they make it) movies will come to watch it. That many people should be enought for the producers to make it. It will depend alot on the success of the 4 new animated Eva films they are making. unfortunatley, it will always have at least a little bit of western crap.:(

  24. AkiRei

Man i cant wait till it gets fansubbed or released over here in the UK. :( Its tooo far away.

  25. Ferdi

when does it come out in Australia

  26. DD

Yeah i’ve been waiting YEARS for these movies, i just love evangelion to bits :)
It seems alot of us aussies are gettin impatient too, cause we get everything LAST :(
but hey, i gota a really good feelin about this new ending stuff, i actually enjoyed the first two endings more than other people, sure nothing really got answered, but that leaves people to think of heaps of theories and shit. i don’t think EVERYTHING will be answered though, knowing Anno there will be somke cliffhanger and somthing unknown, but heres to the EVA movies! (when they get here :Z )

    -DD

  27. David

I’m not sure about the Australian release date, but I hear ya. I can’t wait until it hits North America too!

  28. Alexian

Well, It’s 2008, and no Evangelion Live Action Movie is out ANYWHERE. If you did your research, you would have seen that It’s going to (Hopefully) be released as Early as 2008, but as Late as 2015 (Yes, 2015).

  29. David

Alexian – This was a post for the ‘Eva reboot’ anime films, not the live action one. The live action Evangelion is not even ‘in production’ – it’s been on hold for 2 years or so…

Here’s a review of the first rebooted eva film we posted last year.

  30. Andy

i have benn srching for the relise date for the US, but insted i fined this depressing news!

  31. TOTAL

Well, there are some huge gaps in time on these posts, but I’m glad to see the last one was only a few weeks ago. I have watched the Eva reboot on DVD, but only at an Anime Convention. It was really, really well done to say the least. Although, I’m still not finding the release date(s)here in the U.S. I’m gonna search for some more info, but if anyone knows maybe they could say so and I’ll check back.

  32. Andy

what is the use searching i have surfed all thoughout the web, no release date! i gues i will just wait untill it airs comertial….

  33. Andy

is there some new news yet or should i just shut up untill 2015 like alexian said

  34. Andy

hey you guys i looked up on a good website and they said it is lookin like it will come out in 2010……………..2 yrs…….i wonder if i will still remember about it in 2 long years

  35. Lewieeeee

    YEWWWWWWWWWW
saw the trailer for Evangelion 1.0 today, looks so fucking intense.
Can not wait till it’s in Aussie cinemas

  36. Andy
