I don't think it is but i guess this might be a SPOILER.

actually i don’t think sato’s a loser i think he’s cool and besides the best part about NHK is that you get to listen to the same song over and over and over and hear the characters say “hikikomori” a million times hahaha i loved it cause it was funny. That's really uncomfortable. Who wants to do that? I'd lie too, but only for so long. From an unsypathetic angle; Sato's a loser.

@David, yeah, Sato’s a wank when it comes to that, but if we’re looking at it from a sympathetic angle, it’s understandable why he lies.

No one likes to admit they have problems and if Sato admits he has this problem, he’ll be forced to “own” his disorder. My question is: Why, oh why won't Sato listen to Misaki? I wanted to bang my head against the wall every time he's like "I'm not a NEET!" It was especially frustrating when he decides to lie to her. I guess we'll find out soon enough how things turn out.

NHK has been great so far (volume one). It's a worthwhile show to watch.@griever: I think society is responsible for forming extremes. So basically if you were always bad with people, then the competitive nature of society made you worse, however if you were naturally good with people, then competition made you thrive.

Actually I feel as if NHK is one of the more honest shows when it comes to dealing with the issues surrounding the NEET. Hikikomori are quite different from agoraphobics. The case studies of those that have made it into counseling resemble people with severe depression coupled with social anxiety, although it's chicken-egg in saying which came first.

My senior thesis was on how Japanese society both enabled and subsequently stigmatized hikikomori, the media being an enforcer of stigmatization. Hikikomori sounds a lot like agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is a crippling disorder, in my opinion, and if hikikomori is anything like it, well, that sucks. However, some scenes in the anime went against some key agoraphobic behaviors...

@griever, what was your senior thesis about? There are several inaccuracies regarding hikikomori, so overall, I felt that the first volume really failed to do any good for the situation. I will probably watch/read the series, just to make a complete list, but I have to admit, I was disappointed that they decided to gloss over a psychological problem, as usual.

I actually cited this in my senior thesis.
