I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Good stuff, Rachel. I saw this a couple years back (the US version is actually shortened quite a bit), but I wasn’t sure exactly what to say. I enjoyed the anti war themes, and the little nods to historical and cultural elements (ie: the samurai helmet juxtaposed against Casshern’s own helm), but I couldn’t come up with a cohesive review. But, it wasn’t just me. I also passed the film off to two other friends, and neither of them could figure out how to approach the film.

So, in that sense, my hat goes off to you. Nice job.

Also, in the corner of good anime adaptations you might want to check out Dororo. That movie is easily one of my favorite films this year.

I found that visually this movie is simply stunning! I really enjoyed this film, but I found that the story was lacking in something… I really want to watch the new extended version of the film on DVD. I liked this film because the more I think about it the more I like it! thanks for the post! ^_^

@Chris, thanks! I liked this movie since it showcased a lot of what anime is style and storywise. It gave me hope that LA anime can be something worthwhile.

@lostty, what was lacking, in your opinion? I think it went too fast and tried to cram too much in, but aside from that, I liked the story.

The story didn’t seem to always be focusing on one thing, it changed a lot from character to character, with there past and there role in the story, without any time for me to actually really understand what was going on with the last.
Though, I would also agree that they did seem to “cram too much in”. Nevertheless I still enjoyed it, but I think I’ll probably have to see it again before I can say anything for certain considering it’s been more than a year since I last saw it.

I haven’t seen the movie. But since most of the comments doesn’t like the movie. I think I don’t need to try watching it.

@Movie Reviews Collection, the people who commented on this post liked Casshern, to varying degrees. I highly recommend watching this movie, especially if you’re an anime or special effects fan.

It’s a great movie, not incredibly profound, but it still has depth.

    *SPOILER*

I have to say my favorite scenes outta this involved the “Neo-Sapiens”, and moreover, those early scenes where we see this sort of Kubrick-esque forced evolution that leads up to their leader deciding that mankind doesn’t deserve to live. Speaking of the Leader, his introduction is my all-time favorite scene from the movie. Sort of rising from the pool like a biblical Adam from the primordiall ooze, confused and impressionable.

@Twilley, that’s an interesting shot you describe, that weird lightning bolt thing was the highlight, though.
