I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Everyone’s seen them; the greasy unkempt anime uber-fan who can tell you the secret religious meaning in an anime series. By unkempt I mean unwashed and oblivious to daily hygiene. Even

Dead Leaves was a really, really weird yet awesome movie that made little sense visually but in actuality made total sense story-wise. I know that that’s a confusing statement, so while I’ll try to elaborate on that, I recommend watching Dead Leaves to fully comprehend what I’m getting at.
First off, Dead Leaves is [...]

Anime conventions always seemed like things that happened to other people. I’d open a Newtype and gaze longingly at the pictures of fans lined up to get in to cons and preview manga and anime and enjoy the company of other fans. Living in Southern Illinois for 10 years makes you think you never [...]

I love sharing anime with my friends and family. I’d like to think that I have good taste in anime and that I like good anime and only good anime, but that’s my opinion. I thought that when I lent out Escaflowne to a friend that she would join the ranks of Escaflowne [...]

After much waiting and anticipation, I finally saw Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. Forgoing the opportunity to see it on the big screen since I didn’t want to watch it in downtown Chicago, I’ve waited 8 months to see this film. Miyazaki’s latest film that hit stateside last summer is a treat; awash with originality [...]
