I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

East-East is an Asian food market with two locations in the St. Louis area, both of which are located on Olive Blvd. One is in U-City and the other in Chesterfield. EE is primarily a Korean grocer, but as often happens with ethnic stores, isn’t strictly Korean.
There are lots of tasty Korean flavors in [...]

If I could sum up Haibane Renmei in a few words it would be: vanilla ice cream. Why vanilla ice cream? I would say that, though the short series was a pleasant distraction and a nice change of pace from the action and blood packed series I’m used to, it was a little bland [...]

Just wanted to say that J International Food has increased their variety and supply of Japanese sweets if not Japanese crackers and snacks. The Pocky selection has gotten better and they have a few more varieties of Kasugai and Lotte candies. You still have to search the store, though, to find all the different types [...]

What makes something real? Is it real if it’s something we can touch and hold? Is it a quantifiable entity? Would a painting done of a fictitious time, place, or person still be considered real if it is real to the artist?
Now that I’ve asked some truly “deep†questions, what the hell am I [...]

Akira is one of those anime movies that almost everyone’s seen and has strong feelings toward. Not so much for A Tree of Palme, a film created by Nakamura Takashi – chief animation director for Akira. A Tree of Palme is, essentially, an artsy-fartsy anime rendition of Pinocchio.
There is no introduction into the world [...]

Sorry for the weirdness going on with the site – I’m trying to spiff it up a bit. So it’ll be going through some changes as David uses his wicked web skills to make my anime blog a super cool rock’n roll fun time place to be.
