I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

I am starting to track and make note of those things which make me want to scream at the heavens for either it’s subject matter, tackiness, disturbing qualities, or anything which produces a general malaise.
In my searches on the net for fan art and other things, I’ve stumbled upon many, many, horrific images and some [...]

I’m still looking for the ultimate abode of Japanese treats in St Louis. My search has taken me to all of two international grocers in the area, one being J International Food and the other being Global Foods. I am still determined, though, to finding the best and largest selection of Pocky and whatnot this [...]

I’ve discovered many talented artists by Google-ing (fill in the blank) fan art. I myself like looking for Final Fantasy, Hellsing and Capcom fan art among many others (yay! Advent Children fans rejoice; there’s so much fan art! ). Everybody has a favorite series or game with memorable characters that someone else can [...]

Gungrave for me actually started off on the wrong foot. The first episode left me scratching my head and muttering “WTF???” Then top that off with the title character dressed like a gay cowboy, or what Japanese people think a gay cowboy should like and I was convinced that I didn’t wanna watch [...]

To watch anime with subtitles or not – that is the question. Some purists believe that the only way to truly appreciate anime is to watch with the subtitles on and only with subtitles. These are the same people who want to learn Japanese so that they can read their manga the way it was [...]

Last Exile was a big disappointment for me. Perhaps it was disappointing because of the way I built it up in my head or maybe it was a disappointment because the plot sucked. I actually had to make myself watch this anime for the first five or six episodes since the dialog and story were [...]

I posted an article a while back titled “Where to Pocket Pocky†in which I listed two places in St. Louis to get your Asian goody groove on. One was Global Foods in Kirkwood and the other was J International Food. I have thus far only visited J International Food, which is only like nine [...]

I was walking around Crestwood Plaza in St. Louis on Sunday and decided to check out Waldenbooks, which I know sells manga and wall scrolls. While looking through the wall scrolls for a Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children one, I turned to a fellow fan and asked him if he had seen any FFVII: Advent [...]
