The Anime Blog Poll: What’s Your View on Cosplaying?

CosplayI still think that you should only cosplay if you do it right, but that’s my elitist opinion. I can only comment from a viewer’s perspective, not as a cosplayer.

Although I would never dress up outside of Halloween as an anime character, I would consider dressing as a Lolita, since in my opinion, it’s a fashion statement and not an actual cosplay per say. I would also consider sewing for someone who looked like a character, but only if they looked a helluva a lot like said character and invested the time and money in the cosplay, otherwise, you’re not only embarrassing yourself but me as well.

How many people cosplay? How many just watch, and how many of you out there mock cosplayers to no end?

I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

I cos-play. The problem is… I’m black. XD!! So I have to find black or tanned anime characters for cos-play.
But I agree with you. It’s cool to dress as your favourite anime character, but at least look somewhat like them. If you’re weighing 300lb… not so great to dress up as something as skimpy as Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop.

    Don’t remind me!!! D: lol

I’m in a pretty sad predicament. I love cosplay to death (but I am also elitist about it, only GOOD cosplay that really looks like the character). I love costumes in general, and cosplay is like the best of both costuming and Japanese media. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the means to cosplay anyone! I can’t sew and I’ve never known anyone who can.

Well wait, one time I tried to cosplay Shinya (Dir en Grey), but I didn’t finish the dress in time. It was ok, though, because it looked like crap and I would have been too embarrassed to wear it anyway.

I think I like gothic lolita for the same reason I like cosplay. I’m an artist and I like treating the body as a work of art too. ^^

@Roku, looks like we’re rowing the same boat when it comes to cosplay!

I love good cosplay, and though I believe everyone should express themselves as they see fit, I have a difficult time accepting the lesser quality cosplays.
