I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

    Thanks Dave!

I’m planning on featuring an anime artist once a month to showcase their work and pick their brains! Look for January’s artist to be featured sometime in the next two weeks (less I hope < ^^;)

Props once again to Apricot for her time and drawing!!

Thanks -Ez! Over the years I’ve been continually floored by excellent fan art and anime style art. As an artist myself, I want to know what these fantastic illustrators have going on inside that make them create this art. I also wanna give ‘em props for making my day and helping make the world a more interesting place. So if these artists made your day, don’t forget to let em’ know! ^^

January’s artist will be featured on the 18th BTW, so keep reading!

Wow! Mentors give artists a big boost in both confidence and ability. It’s awesome that you have a chance to learn from someone like Apricot, -joon. Good for you and let us know how that works out for you ^^.

WOW Apricot, I see your art in DA and I’m Greatly inspired and I always see the urge of uniquness in your art! And reading this, makes me inspired to also chase a unique style that I want! I also think my art is too common. I think your too good for me to ask you this but can you tell me in DA (grimcookie.deviantart) what you think can help me find a unique style? Thank you!

The problem with deviantART and anime is that there are so many people on there showing off doodles that they work from a ‘how to draw anime’ book in order to create. That is why a lot of people won’t take the art form serious. That is also why some of the more serious anime artists have moved on from that site. Half those kids don’t even know what superflat is.
