Global Foods

I’m still looking for the ultimate abode of Japanese treats in St Louis. My search has taken me to all of two international grocers in the area, one being J International Food and the other being Global Foods. I am still determined, though, to finding the best and largest selection of Pocky and whatnot this city has to offer.

Global Foods is another International Market in the Metro area that boasts a large and varied selection of foreign flavors. Located off Kirkwood Avenue near the downtown Kirkwood area, Global Foods is gi-normeous. It is much larger than J-International and has one thing that J’s is sorely lacking: organization. Global Foods is huge and if they didn’t have everything nicely labeled and put neatly on the shelves in the appropriate place, I doubt they would get as much business as they do.

G.F. is nicely kept and does have a huge variety from around the world (on average most countries and cultures get at least one side of a very large aisle), but their Japanese selection is just plain sad. It’s located next to the refrigerator section that houses the dairy, near the back of the store. The Japanese section takes up barely one fourth of an aisle. It does have some Pocky and Hi-Chew and a few other things, but the choices peter out after that.

So, while Global Foods is huge and has a great selection of international foods, it wouldn’t be my first choice to go to if all I had in mind was getting something Japanese in nature.

I’m going to try going to an Asian Market next time. Someone tipped me off that there are some Asian grocers off Hgwy 44 on Olive. Surely such a place will have an abundance of treats…surely.

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.
