Rachel

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

    That looks a bit.. queer

That combination doesn’t sound good at all. First off, waaaay too much over-processed flavor in one funky sausage, and secondly not many people like to combine sweet fish taste and cheese… I applaud your bravery in trying it out, so that others don’t have to give in to their curiosity!

I hate cheese kamaboko. It’s one of the surprisingly weird foods that made me gag and seriously look for a trash can. Maybe you got a better package than me, but mine was strongly fishy.

Rachel, I love your snack reviews! Thanks for trying this one so I don’t have to!

@Lenners, it tastes as queer as it looks.

@Kabitzin, thank you for the applause! Indeed sweet fish taste and cheese is a horrible, horrible combo. After I brought them home, a “friend” told me they were really tasty. Wonder what I did to get on his bad side…

@griever, you ate this too? Oh you poor thing!

@Julie, thanks! Were you thinking of buying chīkama at the store?

@Rachel, I haven’t been tempted by this particular taste delight, but those yummy little crab snacks that you reviewed back in November still make me pause on my way to the check at the Japanese market. They look so bizarre that I really want to try them, even though I know that they will most likely be gross and disgusting.

Please have more snack reviews! You are actually brave enough to try some really weird stuff – I’m still at the wasabi pea stage of the snack game! Oh, and of course I’ll try anything with chocolate….

@Julie, bwahahaha do try the crab thingies! Not really… I take that back, I’m not that evil. But to alleviate the curiosity, maybe try ‘em out some time. Have water, or kool-aid, or beer, or battery acid handy to get the taste out just in case you find them as inedible as I did.
