I know that It might seem different from the US version, But The reason that is, We have monsters and aliens here, there they have youkai.
It is all the same concept, but in reality the story’s would be different because of the location of the witchblade at that time.
And also TOP COW has stated the anime and manga are canon, just different place different time.
Just keep an open mind.

Actually the author admits that is an American comic book being melded with Japanese Manga. It’s more of an experiment to see how it would turn out according to them. And so far I think it is probally one of the most graphic things I’ve seen on the market and I commend Bandai for not censoring it. I believe that the makers of the comic book should be proud of the new outlook the japanese have made for the Witchblade series.

@Vampkat, I may be wrong, but the original Witchblade, from Top Cow, showcased aliens and demons and not oni. While old Japanese folklore does deal with demons, it doesn’t mean anything coming out of America that deals with demons is Japanese. We Westerners have a fine tradition of demonic inspirations.

To be short: Witchblade is most definitely an American creation created by Americans in America for Americans living in the USA.

While it is true that the Witchblade Takeru manga does tie the Witchblade story to Japanese folklore…in particular, oni (which are a type of demon)…this is just an adaptation of a western comic. Until the Japanese adaptations came out in 2006, the back story was heavily weighted toward Western history…previous wielders of the Witchblade were Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and Marie Curie.

Dirtnap is correct. Witchblade was created by Marc Silvestri, David Wohl, Brian Haberlin, and Michael Turner in 1995. A preview issue was given out at that year’s San Diego Comic Book Convention and Witchblade #1 hit the stands with the November 1995 issue. The series is still in publication.

It has become a franchise of sorts. From 2000 to 2002, there were 23 episodes of a live-action adaptation which aired in the US on TNT (Turner Network Television). In 2004, the US publisher Top Cow Productions signed a deal with Japanese animation studio Gonzo to produce an anime version. The series started airing in Japan in April 2006. At around the same time, the manga adaptation was produced (Witchblade Takeru). It started its run in March 2006. In August 2006, a novel was published in Japan called Witchblade Lost Generation ~ Midori no ShÅjo.

Witchblade is from japan because withblade is a old japaness folktale about demons.

No, Vampkat. It was created over 10 years ago in the states. Only been in Japan a couple years, tops.

I was a fan of the Top Cow comic growing up. Ever since they put the Anime version on XBOX live for download, it sorta re-sparked my interest in the series. I think I’ll check it out, though it does look a tad porn-ish.

I remember witchblade from way back in the day. I think I received some Witchblade and tomb raider comic from somebody. Very strange teamup. I think also, there was a Witchblade and Shi comic. Either way, I don’t remember it being much like this
