Malice Mizer Front Man, Mana, to Attend Nation’s Largest Anime and Manga Convention
Visual kei fans get ready for a musical explosion as Moi dix Mois rocks Anime Expo 2009 as an official Guest of Honor for the nation’s largest anime and manga convention held July 2-5, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Moi dix Mois is a sound project headed by Mana, the consummate guitarist and leader of Malice Mizer which is on indeterminate hiatus. In addition to writing music and lyrics, Mana does all of the computer programming and arrangements for his songs. Mana’s strikingly electrifying and unprecedented musical creation is the result of his remarkable talent to combine the diametrical opposites, such as the classical and the avant-garde, the elegant and the delirious, or the creative and the destructive. Bloody Disgusting (caution-site has mature content) is reporting that the Live Action Akira Film, which was to involve Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Brothers has been canceled:
‘Akira’ Project is Dead as a Doornail: Sad news comes in this weekend as we have learned that not only has Robinson left the project, but Tetsuo and Kaneda’s adventure is “dead as a doornail,” a report we’ve confirmed with two separate sources. I can only hope it gets revived in the near future as this could have been one of the coolest effin’ movies ever…Continue Reading at BD.com

The Anime Blog reader and contributor Liz Ohanesian has a feature on Detroit Metal City over at L.A. Weekly. Here’s an excerpt:
Like the popular animated series Metalocalypse, Detroit Metal City lampoons the conventions of death metal, the obsessive adherence to “evil” images and “brutal” music. The language is coarse, really coarse, but there’s a purpose behind it. Continue reading about Detroit Metal City at L.A. Weekly

Tokyopop has a pair of contests. However, they both require the contestant to do more than just send in an entry form.

First, Tokyopop has teamed with Glico for an art contest. The entry has to be an original piece of artwork or a 1 to 3 panel comic which includes images of Pocky. The grand prize is $1000 cash. 4 runners up will also receive a prize which is a$20 Borders gift card.

We’ve have an exclusive image from ‘9‘ – the upcoming (9/9/09) animated film produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov and directed by Shane Acker. It has a very ‘anime-style’ aesthetic that I think you’ll like. Here’s the exclusive image:

The Watchtower, which sits atop the Cathedral in which several of the stichpunk beings are hiding under the leadership and direction of the character “1”. This is the highest vantage point in the war-ravaged city and presumably the safest place from which to monitor the threatening landscape below. View a high-resolution version of the photo
A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The ChocolateFactory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker’s distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and features the music of Danny Elfman.
When 9 (The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction.
Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.
