The Anime Blog Poll: Is Hentai Good Or Bad?

It’s everywhere; it’s on the newsstands, it’s on the internet and it’s even in your mailbox if you have a subscription to it. It’s the number one thing people search for on the internet and it’s a huge industry across the globe. What is “it”? “It” is porn.

ham-chan discovers hentaiOMG! Porn!! Run away!!! No, no, I don’t mind porn, really. It serves many useful purposes, believe it or not. So I have no quarrel with it no matter what form it takes. I don’t mind real-life porn (hetero or homo) and I don’t mind anime porn (yaoi, yuri, or hentai).

I don’t go outta my way to embrace it, nor do I purchase it, but I don’t mind seeing it or having a friend like it. My theory is that there are some romantically challenged people that may need a bit of help. There are people, though who say porn crosses moral and religious boundaries and/or that it exploits women. Even make-believe women?

Hentai is anime porn (it had to happen, right?). I’m not a huge fan of hentai, but you can’t fault its creative use of marine life and S&M. I’m wondering if the people who dislike real life porn carry that over to include hentai, or if people who say porn exploits women (or men) consider animated women in need of empowerment. Some people also consider hentai to be a blight to anime since there are folk new to the medium who assume all anime is hentai (I admit I was one of those). Where do you stand on this issue?

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

People would argue about the terminology and how “hentai” is used only in English. But I like my porn animated.

  2. Anga

Hentai only ruins the public image of anime. If I have to choose between ‘lol you watch cartoons’ or ‘lol you watch cartoon porn’ I take first one any day.

This is a results of some gaps of cultural misunderstandings. Of course, this could also be the end product of wrong first impressions. *sigh*

Hentai, to me, is interesting by virtue of the fact that the animators can create fantasies that could NEVER be recreated in RL. Unless of course you can pay a Cthulhu enough to work in the porn industry…

My first impression of anime was a bad one due to hentai Anga, but I got over that scarring experience to actually discover how great anime really is. If you’re into animation and have an open mind from the get go like I did, I think that hentai won’t dissuade you too much.

Most initial exposure to anime people usually get is from kid’s shows like Pokemon, Digimon, One Piece, Yugi-oh, etc. That crap would swear me off of anime before hentai would any day!! :)

In my opinion porn is o.k. if it is sex in a context and in the right context (i.e., boy meets girl, no fooling around, no perversions, participants respect each other). This attitude leads to the exclusion of all ALL real life porn and most animated porn (as it happens to be). The only adult anime I have is a title that is the animation of a bishoujo game that I own. Most ero games do not meet the criteria, but there is a handful Japanese only titles that I find o.k.

i like porn it makes my ——–l:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::> stick..(u get the point) but anyway i dont mind porn i mean its a way i was born so im fine with it. And if its hentai it realy doesnt matter because its just a bunch of drawings moving real fast to make it a movie. but u no i dont mind it

Hentai is just one of Japan’s “weird” culture thing for us because Japan has a very complex
definition of sex that we can hardly understand. It’s true it maybe unmoral because of the
“violent” or “explict” use of the tentacles for example but there’s a meaning beyond that.
Japan is one country that had many troubles in the past so its culture changed and its more
open-minded than ours. Hentai or “animated porn” as someone said is neither bad or good is
just an expression of Japan’s sex , many people are perverts and just want to see drawings
have sex but for me it’s a kind of art.

    PD. I’m just 17 years-old and I’m more open-minded than any adult I know. :S

    Have a good day :)

Hentai is just the darker side of anime just like porn movies are the darker side of regulars I mean theres no big deal really its all based on your tastes I personally find Hentai interesting and amusing because you know it wont really ever happen its just a wild fantasy that is different I’m not saying its good or bad but its really up to the viewer to decide but its not right to just outright hate it and try to spread your hate to other people. I say let them see for themselves not force your opinion on them All porn live or not pushes religious boundries, but things have been doing that for as long as mankind has lived on this earth so no big deal there

@|> @ v i |> , I don’t know if I quite agree with your theory of a troubled past leading to a better future for Japan. The Japanese definitely have a very different view on sex, however. Where else can a person find penis shrines that loan out lil’ penis effigies for barren couples?

As to hentai tentacle rape having meaning, I disagree. Tentacle sex really isn’t all that new to Japanese culture. Some of the earliest examples date back to the Edo period and don’t have much meaning behind them other than what’s there. So, you’re correct when you see tentacle sex as a kind of art; it is.

@Matsu Zabi, I agree. Porn’s been around for millennium and it’s up to each individual to either accept it, reject it, or ignore it. Porn, in my opinion, will always be around in one incarnation or another. Hentai is just one of its latest.

  11. Cloud Strife

I believe that Hentai is something interesting to check out if your into that kind of thing but if your not no big deal. It’s one of those “What trips your trigger” type of things.

However, I don’t think that people should box anime up with Hentai. It is true that Hentai is anime style b but to say that all anime is hentai just isn’t right.
There are a lot of anime and manga out there that are completely out of the realm of Hentai just like how a majority of TV shows are out of the realm of porn. I just think people should keep a more open mind about anime.

  12. NICK

“”I like hentai, but I won’t go overboard with it”"it’s not better than RL but it makes your fantasies(that have to do with one anime as an example)real(e.g. vivi from one piece

  13. Rachel

@NICK, Many people prefer hentai for the reason that it does fulfill their fantasies in regards to anime. Also, there’s some very interesting things that they do with hentai that just can’t be duplicated with RL. To each their own, but hentai fills an interesting niche, don’t you think?

Even though this comment is quite a few months late, I figure I may as well chime in. On a personal level, I’ve perused enough of the web to be blasé when it comes to hentai. Even, as far as the X-rated goes, I find I can stomach most hentai more than LA porn, which just feels…grimy, perhaps. Not sure if that makes sense. Obviously popular, but not for myself.

When I stumbled on the existance of hentai, it was in a search for flash games for anime I’d already been exposed to (Cowboy Bebop, to be precise), so I never had the sense of hentai being my exposure to anime. I suppose, reading this blog, that I should be grateful for that.

As I said, I’m pretty blasé on it, I think of it as mostly just another subcategory with its own subcategories. Romantic hentai exists, violent rape hentai exists, cosmic horror hentai exists. Even further, good romantic-, poor romantic-, good (perspectively) rape-, fail-quality rape-, well-done tentacle-, and weak tentacle hentai all exist. The same goes for good and poor harem, romance, sports, childrens’ or slice-of-life anime.

On the topic of what is ‘hentai’ itself, I think that’s not a clear distinction, either. Things like Fate/stay night or Utawarerumono have sex in them (at least, in their initial incarnations), but that doesn’t make them about sex, and certainly, there are things I would call hentai that, sex removed, could stand on their own. So I guess it could be said as where the focus in the storytelling itself lies, that distinguishes hentai from ero.

I think that anyone saying that ‘all anime is hentai’ or ‘all anime is for kids’ should be countered with similar statements, like ‘there are blue socks, so all socks are blue’ or ‘there’s porn on TV, so all TV is porn’.
Examples such as His and Her Circumstances and Koi Kaze (and I would like to add Living Game, among others), mentioned elsewhere on this blog, make me think even further: comments saying ‘everything with sex in it is porn/hentai’ should also be rebuffed. Off the top of my head, a counter could be found in ‘there is sex in James Bond films, so all James Bond films with sex/sex-implying scenes are porn’.

I thank you for time in reading this,
    -CS

P.S. I feel I should arm anyone who agrees with http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouFailLogicForever for a compendium of logical fallacies. TVT is what linked me here, as well (to your Kegadoru post).

P.P.S. If you haven’t heard of Living Game, I suggest giving it a glance. I tend to mentally group it with Koi Kaze, but they’re not very similar.

    Hentai means Pervert.
