The Anime Blog Poll: How Do You Feel About Yaoi?

LOveless yaoiOK – pretty much everyone who has ever read my blog knows how I feel about yaoi, but to refresh for those who haven’t read it in a while or who are new: I do not hate yaoi itself – just dumb fangirls who lust over gay men bonking each other.

I have nothing against yaoi. Porn is porn is porn no matter who’s doing who, and porn has it’s place and I have no ill will towards it.

There’s no place with me, however, for squealy, overwrought fangirls bouncing up and down at the site of Vincent and Cid from Final Fantasy VII sticking their tongues down each other’s throats. Yaoi is drawn for gay men – or at least at thought it was until I talked to a friend who shed some light on the subject.

He read an article somewhere, analyzing why fangirls go goofy over yaoi. He said that in yaoi there’s no woman to be jealous of if the handsome bishounen falls in love – it’s actually good since now there’s two hotties in the picture. He had no answer for the question of why twin-cest exists. I think that one baffled him too.

Are you one of those bouncy fangirls? Do you hate yaoi itself or just the sweaty girls who so adore yaoi they want to see their boyfriends make out with their childhood chums?

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Well said.. I never understood the whole yaoi thing either.. in fact, I still don’t. One question that begs answering from your friend: Would these same yaoi fangirls rent out RL gay porno and be like “OMG \o/” ?

And if so, can I use yaoi as a litmus test as to whether or not a girl is okay with my own collection of pron? That’d be ace if I could.

Anyhow, I haven’t had a whole heap of exposure to yaoi myself, but the standard bishounen type characters tick me off no end (except you Ouran) so I can’t imagine it’d be my thing. Plus I don’t enjoy penix.

Although I will say this: I’m a lot closer to being gay for dudes in anime than I am real life. Especially the cross dressers. Transvestites in anime don’t seem to suffer from the big hands and adams apple problem that you may see on the strip at 11pm.

(P.S. first time seeing your blog, love the name)

I don’t think I’m a fan girl, I’ve read one yaoi from the library and I miught buy a couple if I like the artwork.

I find some of the pictures mildly erotic but I just want to redraw them all as women!

Imho – there’s far too much yaoi and not enough yuri being published for me!

What interests me is the way in which the girls on LJ gush about it, some of the reviews I’ve read recently have been quite freaky to say the least! *@_@*

Hazel – That’s interesting that your library carries yaoi; is it shonen ai or straight up yaoi?

I guess if I squinted a little, I could make believe that some of those guys in manga are girls (I mean they are super fem to begin with) but I might have to be drunk to see them as chicks after they got nekkid.

    They sure are pretty though…

Guys in anime, especially fantasy or fantastical themed anime, are very delicate and feminine for some reason. I think that it has a lot to do with the Japanese culture.

In America when people see a beautiful, fem guy, they’re like, “Man, he’s soooo gay” but in Japan I imagine that the girls fairly swoon when they see a bishi looking dude walking down the street.

Said friend who had the insight about the yaoi also discussed with me how the hair fashions in Japan are becoming more androgynous. So is it life imitating art or vice versa?

Crayotic Rockwell – As to wanting to know if your lady would be OK with your porn collection because she has her own dirty, secret stash of yaoi: In my opinion, porn is porn and if she has her stack of “it makes me want to touch myself” manga you should totally be able to have yours ;) .
