The Anime Blog Poll: Are You An Anime Fan of Fan Service?

naga boobiesFan service is one of those things that can either be the icing on the cake or the straw that broke the camels’ back when it comes to a series’ enjoyableness. I personally can only deal with fan service in small doses when I’m not expecting it. Yet I can tolerate it and even enjoy it when I see it coming, specifically in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Jubei-Chan: The Ninja Girl.

I don’t mind jiggly boobs or obscure references as much if they’re used wisely and in moderation. A comedy may naturally have lots more fan service than say a serious drama. I can’t stand however, an entire series that takes itself way too seriously and yet is riddled with humungo tits and an assortment of 15 year-old girls wearing this year’s fan service fashion line up. Personally, if I wanted that much boob and panty exposure I’d rent some hentai, but that’s me.

Do you like your fan service or would you rather do without the overabundance of unnecessary gags?

I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life. After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

Wow that’s a pretty good example that many people like fan service in small doses. I think it’s OK in small doses too – although in a GOOD comedy it can be hilarious if it features gratuitous fan service.

Hmmmm, yep. It does indeed look like a lotta peeps only enjoy it when it’s served up in small portions.

I do like the fact, though, that there are people brave enough to admit they like anime boobage thrown in the mix. What’s the best part of fan service to most of you that voted yes? Is it the school girl uniforms, the panty shots, the gravity defying boobs, or is it something I missed?
