I was exposed to anime as a child while living in Germany after watching the Japanese version of Hans Christian Anderson’s the Little Mermaid. In high school, a classmate in art brought in Akira as an example of Japanese art. I wasn’t very impressed with anime at the time, but my re-exposure to it in 2000 thanks to Escaflowne had me hooked for life.After sorting out what I liked about anime (great stories, beautiful animation and epic battles) and disliked about anime (big boobs, angst-y 15 year-old kids, most mecha, sports stories and style-over-substance), I got into it with a vengeance.I do love almost all aspects of Japanese culture and try to be involved with it as much as possible. I have no problem admitting that I incorporate a lot of Japanese trends and traditions into my life as I modify them and make them my own. Anime is a big part of that, along with all the sub-cultures, past and present.

    I don’t really plan things out. I’m pretty impulsive when it comes to what I watch. Sadly, I sometimes buy into a show because I thought the package design was amazing (but I was really buying it for the package and not the show).

    I know I’m looking forward to 5cm Per Second. I’ve already seen it, but I want to see it again badly. I’ve already started in on Kanon and am waiting to see what the manly fuss is all about on Gurren Lagann. Anything else is up to the wind.

    I have LOTS of animes I’m looking forward to this coming Spring, particularly the fangirl-biased ones lol. I’ve been sorely lacking dose of that from the past seasons. I got so inspired that I managed to write a semi-preview for the next season, as early as now ^^;;;

    In terms of US licensed anime, I’ve already preordered 5 centimeters per second, and I’ll get Gurren Lagann as soon as the box set is out.

    In terms of newly airing anime, it’s gotta be Strike Witches…I have a full set of the Konami mecha musume and Strike Witches trading figures, and I <3 loli planes. Though that’ll probably end up sucky, just like the Gunslinger Girl S2 I was looking forward to so much.

    Crayon Shin Chan. My wife’s been telling me about it for years, and the DVDs finally come out this year. I know it’s been on Cartoon Network, but I want to see it at a reasonable time (Adult Swim is fine if you don’t work), and with the original Japanese voices.

    Lucky Star should be getting a region 1 release sometime this year. Definitely want to add the DVDs to my collection.

    I don’t know much of the new anime that is coming out this year, or at least of any I want to see, but I know I want to watch Haruhi Suzumiya season 2 and Higurashi No naku koro ni season 3 (that is if it actually comes out this year, which I’m pretty sure it should?)
