Anime News This Week

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War — The Calamity episode still — Ichigo Kurosaki with spiky orange hair and a torn Soul Reaper uniform braced among flying rubble in bright backlight, from Bleach on Hulu

Anime fans, this week is an end of an era and the start of about five new ones.

A legendary series airs its second-to-last episode today, Night City reopens tomorrow with a completely new crew, JoJo fans finally got the manga news they've been manifesting for years, and 2027 somehow got even more stacked.

We broke all of it down on the latest episode of Anime Goes Audio, presented by The Anime Blog dot com, and here's the written version for everyone who likes to read their news.

Show note, as always: Connor is in the co-host chair while Kenji takes a break for school — Kenji may return, so keep the welcome mat out. Connor's watchlist of shame now stands at 419 entries. He finished none of them this week.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War — The Calamity Airs Episode 49 Today, Finale October 26

This is the big one.

Bleach released its final trailer, titled "THE LAST PV," on October 16, and episode 49, "THE BLADE," premieres today, October 19. Episode 50 follows on October 26 and closes out the entire Thousand-Year Blood War adaptation.

The last two episodes were delayed by about a month on purpose, so the team could push production quality for the climax. The trailer shows Yhwach attacking all three realms at once, with Ichigo, Uryu, the Soul Reapers and even the Arrancars forced onto the same side.

In the U.S., the subtitled episodes stream on Hulu at 8:30 a.m. PT, with Disney+ carrying them internationally. The English dubs of the final two episodes land November 23 and November 30.

Creator Tite Kubo has confirmed this final part includes even more anime-original scenes than the earlier parts — so even manga readers don't fully know how this lands. The epilogue is coming, too: Kazui will be voiced by Azusa Tachibana and Ichika by Ayaka Ohashi.

A franchise that came back from a ten-year break in 2022 does not end quietly. There's even a cinema talk event in Tokyo on October 25 with Kubo and the cast, the day before the finale.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Drops All 10 Episodes Tomorrow

Clear your Tuesday.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 revealed its global release times: all ten episodes arrive on Netflix tomorrow, October 20, at 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET — all in one drop, no weekly wait.

It's a completely standalone story with a new cast: Weak, a washed-up edgerunner legend living without chrome; D, a netrunner hunting the killer who wiped out his clan; Roman, a young camera obsessive documenting Night City's worst moments; and Talia, raised in corpo towers and hardened by a gang.

Studio TRIGGER is back. Kai Ikarashi — who directed episode 6 of the first season — directs, with Bartosz Sztybor returning as showrunner and writer and Masahiko Otsuka on scripts. Anime Corner's followers voted it the most anticipated anime of Fall 2026.

Our Deep Dive this week is all about the gamble: no returning survivors, a new crew, and a team comparing each season to a separate tabletop campaign — same city, same rules, different players. If you're wondering whether a binge drop or a weekly rollout serves a show like this better, we also wrote about how fans actually watch now in Anime Streams Are Very Popular.

Viz Licenses JoJolion for Summer 2027

Say it slowly: JoJolion is coming.

Viz Media announced on October 16 that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 8 — JoJolion arrives in English in Summer 2027, in a deluxe hardcover edition with color pages, matching the Steel Ball Run books.

It's set in the same alternate universe as Steel Ball Run, back in Morioh, with an amnesiac Josuke at the center of a new mystery. The timing is perfect: the first Steel Ball Run volume was one of the top-selling manga in comic shops in the first half of 2026.

Viz's Summer 2027 slate also includes Someone Hertz, Under Doctor, and a complete 25-volume Kamisama Kiss box set — which is less a book purchase and more a furniture purchase.

The Dub Wave: PSYREN, Black Clover, Aoashi and The Apothecary Diaries

Dub fans ate well this week.

Crunchyroll added the English dub of PSYREN today — the cult classic's vindication arc continues in two languages. Crunchyroll also revealed the English dub casts and staff for Black Clover Season 2 and Aoashi Season 2, with the Black Clover dub having premiered October 17.

Meanwhile, The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 dub started streaming October 15, right behind the subtitled premiere.

Subs for the impatient, dubs right behind them for everyone else. That's the new normal, and it's a good one.

Love Live! Hasunosora Gets 7 Episodes and a January 10 Date

The Love Live! Hasu no Sora Jogakuin School Idol Club TV anime premieres January 10, 2027, and runs seven episodes.

This one follows the 106th class, with stories set between April and June of their school year. The game and earlier film featured the 103rd through 105th classes, so the series is literally passing the torch to a new generation.

It airs at 10:30 p.m. on Tokyo MX in Japan. No international streaming platform has been announced yet.

Nurumeta and Tsugumi Project Move Forward

Two quieter announcements worth your attention:

Kokamumo's four-panel comedy Nurumeta is getting a TV anime in 2027, produced by Soigne. It follows four girls — Kurumi, Chiaki, Sakina and Shiyuki — whose everyday lives deliberately dodge the usual slice-of-life formula.

And the Tsugumi Project anime revealed its first three cast members this weekend. Casting news is where a project stops being a rumor with nice art and starts being a real production.

The Fable Season 2 Premieres January 9

The world's most terrifying professional killer, ordered to live a quiet normal life and spectacularly bad at it, returns January 9.

The Fable Season 2 unveiled new cast members and a new key visual this week. January is becoming a genuine problem for watchlists everywhere.

Nue's Exorcist Anime Arrives Summer 2027

Announced at the Jump Press showcase on October 12: Nue's Exorcist is getting a TV anime in Summer 2027 on TV Asahi.

Gakuro can see phantoms and wants nothing to do with them — until he finds Nue, a powerful phantom sealed in a room at his school for 60 years and obsessed with modern pop culture.

The credentials are serious: the manga took first place in AnimeJapan's 2025 "Manga We Want to See Animated" ranking, with over 156,000 votes cast across the poll. Studio Hibari animates, Hiroyuki Hashimoto directs, and Hiroshi Seko (Jujutsu Kaisen, DAN DA DAN) handles series composition. Kaito Miura stars as Gakuro and Saori Onishi voices Nue.

New fans have a perfect runway: volume 17 of the manga lands November 4.

Quick Hits: Demon Slayer on Prime Video, a Precure Record, and a Sincere Note

Demon Slayer's complete TV anime arrived on Prime Video on October 13 — all four seasons, 63 episodes, five arcs, finally in one place alongside the Infinity Castle movie that landed in September.

The Star Detective Precure! film just became the highest-grossing standalone film in the Precure franchise. The magical girl economy remains undefeated.

And a sincere note to close the news: word came this week that Jun Maeda, the creator behind Kanon, Air, Clannad and Heaven Burns Red, is receiving palliative care for pharyngeal cancer. No jokes from us on this one. His stories taught a generation of fans how to feel things about fictional families, and we're rooting for him, full stop.

Deep Dive: The Edgerunners 2 Gamble

This week's debate: is a sequel with none of the original cast a betrayal or the bravest move of the fall?

The team's philosophy is that each Edgerunners works like a separate campaign of the tabletop game the universe came from — same city, same rules, different table, different players. Night City is the main character. Everyone else is renting.

Early reactions are splitting down the middle, which usually means the swing is real. New to the franchise and not sure where to start? Our explainer, What is Anime? Many Adults Are Learning That They Also Enjoy Anime, is a good first step.

Spoiler Talk: Bleach Episode 49, "THE BLADE"

We ran the spoiler siren on the show, so here's the spoiler-free version: the trailer is a victory lap and a threat at the same time, the month-long delay looks worth it, and the fandom's main jobs this week are rewatching the cour and protecting anime-only fans from spoilers.

On the podcast we get into Uryu's endgame position, Kubo's expanded anime-original material, and what the epilogue casting means — with a verdict from each host. Listen before October 26 if you want to be ready for the finale.

One to Watch: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

Our pick is the obvious one: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, tomorrow, October 20, all ten episodes on Netflix.

Maya's verdict: clear your Tuesday — this is the one binge this season that will have the entire fandom feeling something by Friday.

Connor's verdict: Night City doesn't give sequels, it gives second chances — and this is the fall's most dangerous second chance.
